Thank you for presenting your work on MWSJ. It sounds like a very interesting project, and I appreciate the efforts your making to build a space for academic scholarship that begins to move away from what you called the “sterile” and “obtuse” publication practices of many Western journals. My question is forward looking, as I’m curious to hear how you think such journals might in the future interact with the longstanding writing studies journals. Is your hope that those traditional journals be more open to the scholarship of people working in contexts like yours? Or do you see the MWSJ—and other future journals like it—fulfilling that need on their own?
I really appreciate your perspective here–I think sometimes we in academia can get a bit of tunnel vision when it comes to our own processes and practices. I think your approach of building your own journal is a valuable one (and very welcome in the context of a conference full of scholars who have similar challenges finding avenues for research on Editing and Publishing). I do have a couple of questions. First, I’m curious: how have your institutions responded to the creation of the MENA Writing Studies Journal? Second, what recommendations and advice would you give to editors of more traditional Writing Studies journals when they receive work from scholars in situations similar to yours?
